Last night, I saw Cut Copy, along with Black Kids and Mobius Band, perform at Studio B in Brooklyn.  I was a little reluctant, due to it being a Tuesday night and my general aversion to concerts, but I ended up dancing my ass off.

I was fairly indifferent to Mobius Band, who was on when we arrived.  Except for “Friends Like These”, which was a fun little bouncer.

Black Kids at times showed promise.  “I’m Not Going To Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You”, the catchy teenage lament, is a solid pop song.  Though I enjoyed the 60’s pop elements (girl group sha-la-la’s and a little Motown) along with their energy (they were having so much fun), at times I found them to be grating.  This probably has to do with the vocals being too high in the mix.  The harmonies at times were more of a caterwaul.  Also, lead singer Reggie Youngblood’s Robert Smith impersonation grew a little tiring after a few songs.

Not that either of the openers mattered after Cut Copy.

Cut Copy want you to dance.  Through out the show, singer Dan Whitford held his arms out to the crowd seeming to say, “Rise up little flowers and shake in the wind while I douse you in warm sunshine.” while guitarist Tim Hoey said straight out, “Alright Brooklyn!  This is it!  The last time to dance!  Are you fucking ready?!”

Their words weren’t necessary.  The music had it covered.  All the standouts from the summery In Ghost Colours had the crowd moving the entire set.  Whitford’s experience as a DJ greatly helped with the sequencing, which was excellent.

The most surprising song of the night was “So Haunted”.  The verses, which included a heavy, swaying feedback loop and two guitar setup, were much noisier than the album version, making the 70’s pop chorus even sweeter when it burst from the racket.

Above is a decent quality clip of the bangin’ “Hearts on Fire”, which was the highlight of the evening.  Tuesday night asses never shook so hard.
